Thermostat Set to Heat or Fan-Only
Sounds obvious but it’s the #1 false-alarm. Check the mode dial — should be COOL, not HEAT, not FAN. Setpoint should be below room temperature. Free fix in 30 seconds.
Air at the vents should be 16-20°F colder than your thermostat setting. If it’s warm/lukewarm, the issue is one of five things: thermostat mode, frozen coil, refrigerant leak, outdoor unit not running, or breaker tripped.

Walk outside. Is the outdoor condenser fan spinning? If not, you’re getting warm air because there’s no refrigerant cycle. Causes: tripped breaker (most common), bad capacitor, or compressor failure. Reset the breaker once. If it trips again, call us — don’t keep resetting.
Ice on the indoor coil blocks airflow. Symptom: low air volume + warm air at vents + sometimes water/ice near indoor unit. DIY: turn AC OFF, leave fan ON for 2-4 hours to thaw, replace filter, restart. Recurring = refrigerant or airflow problem — call us.
AC needs refrigerant to cool. Slow leak = gradual loss of cooling power over weeks/months. Symptoms: warmer-than-usual vent air, longer runtimes, higher bills, sometimes ice on outdoor line. Not DIY. We find the leak, fix it, recharge. $400-$1,500 depending on leak.
Outdoor condenser blocked by mulch, plants, dryer vent debris, etc. Can’t dump heat = no cooling. DIY: clear 2-3ft of space around outdoor unit, gently hose fins from the inside out. Don’t bend fins.
