Repair vs Replace

Repair or Replace Your HVAC System? Decision Guide

The 50% Rule: if a single repair costs more than 50% of replacement cost AND your system is past 10 years old, replacement usually wins on total cost of ownership. Below, the framework we use on every Central NJ estimate.

When to Repair vs When to Replace

Six honest tests we run before recommending either path.

System Age

Under 10 years: repair almost always wins. 10-15 years: depends on repair cost (see 50% Rule). for years: replacement usually wins — old systems lose 1-2% efficiency per year and parts get scarce.

The 50% Rule

Repair cost > 50% of replacement cost = lean replace. Example: 12-year-old AC needs $2,800 compressor; new system $7,000. Repair = 40% — borderline. Add another likely failure in 2 yrs ($1,500) = 61% — replace wins.

Refrigerant Type

R-22 (Freon) systems = replace. Banned since 2020. R-22 prices are $150-$200/lb (was $20). Any major refrigerant leak on R-22 unit means $1,500+ to recharge. R-410A or R-454B = repair fine.

Energy Bill Trend

If your last 2 summer bills jumped 20%+ vs prior years (without a usage change), the system is losing efficiency. Combined with age > 12 yrs, lean replace — new SEER2 systems cut 30-50% off cooling costs.

Repair Frequency

3+ service calls in 18 months = replace. Once a system starts failing, the next failure isn’t far behind. The repair-Whac-A-Mole game costs more long-term than a new system.

Comfort & Reliability

Hot/cold rooms, weird noises, humidity problems, fan running constantly — these aren’t single-repair fixes. They’re symptoms of a system that’s done. New systems also come with 10-year parts warranties & our available workmanship support.

How do I know if my HVAC system is dying?
Top 5 signals: (1) age 12+ years, (2) repair frequency — 3+ in 18 months, (3) energy bills up 20%+, (4) hot/cold rooms or humidity problems, (5) R-22 refrigerant. Two or more = lean replace. We’ll do a free second opinion on any repair quote.
Is it ever worth replacing a furnace early?
Sometimes — high-efficiency upgrades pay back fast. Switching from 80% AFUE to 95% AFUE saves $200-$400/yr in NJ. With $0-down financing and federal/state rebates, monthly savings can exceed monthly payment.
Should I repair if my system is under warranty?
Usually yes — parts warranty (10 yrs typical) covers the part itself. You still pay labor ($300-$600 typical). If labor + minor parts < 30% of replacement, repair. We check warranty status during diagnostic.
What about getting a second opinion on a repair quote?
Always recommended. Especially if the quote is >$1,500 or recommends full replacement on a young system. We do free second-opinion diagnostics — we’d rather earn trust than gouge.
Can financing change the repair-vs-replace math?
Yes — significantly. With special financing (subject to credit approval), a $10,000 replacement can be as low as $278/mo for 36 months. If repair savings is $80/mo (lower energy + no repair cycle), net cost is $198/mo — less than many car payments. See financing options.
Will you push me toward replacement to make more money?
No — that’s the our satisfaction guarantee. We’re family-owned and reputation-driven in Central NJ. We’ve recommended repair on systems where competitors quoted full replacement. Read our reviews.
