High Humidity Indoors

Why Is My House So Humid Even with AC Running?

Your AC should dehumidify as it cools — target indoor humidity is 45-55% in summer. If your home feels muggy at 72°F, the AC is undersized, oversized, short-cycling, or you need a dedicated dehumidifier.

6 Causes of High Indoor Humidity

What we actually find when we go inspect humidity-complaint homes in Central NJ.

Oversized AC (counterintuitive #1)

Bigger AC = WORSE humidity. Oversized AC cools rooms too fast — shuts off before dehumidifying. Dehumidification needs 15-20+ minutes of runtime. Short-cycling AC = humid home. Fix: variable-speed AC or right-sized replacement.

Low Refrigerant

Low refrigerant = AC runs longer but coil doesn’t get cold enough to condense moisture out of air. Symptoms: longer runtimes + warmer-than-usual air + sticky humidity. Not DIY. We find the leak, fix, recharge.

Dirty Evaporator Coil

Coil packed with dust/biofilm = poor heat transfer = poor dehumidification. Symptom: AC runs constantly but air is muggy. Fix: deep coil cleaning — $250-$450, often part of seasonal maintenance.

Clogged Condensate Drain

AC drips condensate — if drain pan/line is clogged, that water sits in the system, evaporates back into your air. Symptom: water near indoor unit, muggy air, sometimes water damage. DIY: pour 1 cup white vinegar in drain pan monthly.

Leaky Ductwork in Crawlspace/Attic

Hot humid air pulled into ducts from leaks bypasses the coil — goes straight to your rooms. NJ summers: outdoor air can be 75%+ humidity. Even small leaks add big humidity. Fix: duct sealing — $800-$2,000.

Needs Dedicated Dehumidifier

Some homes (basements, finished crawlspaces, beach-area homes) need a dedicated whole-home dehumidifier. The AC is doing its job — humidity is just too high for AC alone. See our dehumidification options.

What’s a healthy indoor humidity level in NJ?
Summer: 45-55%. Winter: 30-40% (lower because cold outside air has less moisture). Above 60% summer = mold/dust mite risk + sticky discomfort. Below 25% winter = dry skin, static, wood floor damage.
Why does my AC make my house feel cold but still humid?
Classic oversized-AC symptom. The thermostat senses temperature, not humidity. When AC cools quickly and shuts off, humidity stays trapped — you feel cold AND clammy. Solution: variable-speed or properly-sized AC + possibly a dehumidifier.
Will a smart thermostat help with humidity?
Some — newer Ecobee/Nest/Carrier Cor models monitor humidity and adjust AC runtime to dehumidify. Helps marginally. Doesn’t fix oversized AC, refrigerant problems, or duct leaks.
Do I need a whole-home dehumidifier?
Yes if: basement smells musty, you have allergies/asthma made worse in summer, AC can’t get humidity under 55%, or you live near water (Raritan Bay, large rivers). Cost: $1,500-$3,500 installed. See whole-home options.
How much does duct sealing cost in NJ?
$800-$2,500 typical depending on accessibility and leakage. Pays back in 2-4 years through lower bills + better comfort. Often combined with insulation upgrades for max ROI.
Can high humidity cause mold in my home?
Yes. Sustained humidity above 60% feeds mold and dust mites. Common spots: basement walls, attic decking, around HVAC equipment, behind drywall. Get it under 55% to prevent — under 50% if you already have mold issues.
