Bigger AC = WORSE humidity. Oversized AC cools rooms too fast — shuts off before dehumidifying. Dehumidification needs 15-20+ minutes of runtime. Short-cycling AC = humid home. Fix: variable-speed AC or right-sized replacement.
Low refrigerant = AC runs longer but coil doesn’t get cold enough to condense moisture out of air. Symptoms: longer runtimes + warmer-than-usual air + sticky humidity. Not DIY. We find the leak, fix, recharge.
Coil packed with dust/biofilm = poor heat transfer = poor dehumidification. Symptom: AC runs constantly but air is muggy. Fix: deep coil cleaning — $250-$450, often part of seasonal maintenance.
AC drips condensate — if drain pan/line is clogged, that water sits in the system, evaporates back into your air. Symptom: water near indoor unit, muggy air, sometimes water damage. DIY: pour 1 cup white vinegar in drain pan monthly.
Hot humid air pulled into ducts from leaks bypasses the coil — goes straight to your rooms. NJ summers: outdoor air can be 75%+ humidity. Even small leaks add big humidity. Fix: duct sealing — $800-$2,000.
