Signs you need service

When it’s time to replace your AC

We almost always try repair first. But when these start adding up, a new system is the honest call — and we’ll tell you straight either way.

10+ years old

Average central AC lasts 12–15 years. Past 10, efficiency drops fast and repairs start to add up.

Repair cost hits 50%+

When a repair runs more than half the price of a new system, replacement usually wins within 2–3 years.

Refrigerant phase-out

R-22 was banned in 2020 — recharging an old R-22 system runs $100–$200/lb. R-410A is being phased down now too, so a new system runs on today’s lower-GWP refrigerant (R-454B/R-32).

Frequent breakdowns

More than one or two service calls a year is a sign the system is past its prime.

Energy bills climbing

Old units waste energy you’re paying for — a modern high-SEER system can cut cooling costs 20–40% versus a decade-old unit.

Uneven whole-home cooling

Hot upstairs, cold downstairs? A properly sized system — or a zoned/mini-split add-on — evens it out.

Straight talk on cost

What a new AC system costs

Every home is different, so the honest answer is a range. We focus on premium, high-efficiency systems — most of our replacements run $20,000–$25,000 installed, with lower-end options starting around $8,000. A few things move where you land:

System size

We size every job with a Manual J load calculation — bigger homes and higher cooling loads need more system.

Efficiency (SEER)

Higher-SEER systems cost more up front but use less energy — they earn it back on every summer bill.

System type

A standard central AC, a heat pump, or a ductless mini-split each carry different equipment and install costs.

Install complexity

Ductwork changes, electrical upgrades, tight access, or a complex floor plan add labor and materials.

Efficiency that pays you back

A high-efficiency AC pays for itself

Older AC systems waste energy all summer. A modern high-efficiency unit cools using far less power — and that shows up on every cooling bill.

Up to 2×

A modern high-efficiency AC can be more than twice as efficient as a typical decade-old unit — and that gap shows up on every summer cooling bill.

Varies by system and usage

13.4–24 SEER2 lineup

We install from the regional-minimum 13.4 SEER2 up to Carrier’s premium 24 SEER2 variable-speed systems — matched to your home and budget.

Variable-speed comfort

Variable-speed compressors ramp up and down smoothly instead of cycling hard — steadier temperatures, better humidity control, and far less noise.

Right-sized with Manual J

A properly sized system runs efficiently and lasts longer — an oversized AC short-cycles and wears out early.
