First mild October day: turn furnace on for 30 min. Notice anything off? Weird smell (dust burn-off is normal first 10 min), unusual sound, no warm air? Better to find out in October than January. Schedule tune-up if anything seems off.
Fresh filter at start of heating season. Then every 60-90 days through April. Old filters restrict airflow, overheat the heat exchanger (CRACK RISK), and tank efficiency.
Walk every room. Are supply vents open and unblocked by furniture? Are return grilles clear (not behind curtains/sofas)? Closed/blocked vents make the furnace work harder and create cold rooms.
Critical safety check. Press the test button on every CO detector. Replace batteries. Detectors expire after 7-10 years — check the date on the back. If you don’t have one near sleeping areas, get one ($30-$50). NJ code requires.
Cracked heat exchanger leaks CO into your air supply. We inspect with a camera + combustion analyzer during every tune-up. Most important check we do. Catching a small crack means scheduled replacement, not midnight emergency.
We measure flue CO ppm, O2 levels, flame quality, and gas inlet/manifold pressure. Out-of-spec readings mean inefficient (wasted gas) or unsafe (CO risk) operation. 5-minute test, big peace-of-mind.
