Furnace Humming or Buzzing? Every Furnace Noise Explained

A furnace is never perfectly silent — the blower hums, ducts tick as they warm, the burner whooshes to life. But when a new sound shows up, gets louder, or keeps you up at night, it’s telling you something. Here’s what each furnace noise usually means and which ones need a technician now.

Furnace humming

A steady, low hum while the furnace runs is normally the blower motor and transformer doing their jobs. A louder hum than usual, or a hum that continues after the furnace should have shut off, points to a blower motor that’s struggling — failing bearings, a weak capacitor, or a motor working against a clogged filter. Start with the filter. If it’s clean and the hum persists, have the motor and capacitor tested before it fails outright.

Furnace buzzing

Buzzing is almost always electrical. The usual suspects are a failing transformer, a loose wire connection, a worn contactor, or a blower capacitor on its way out. Because buzzing involves the electrical side of the furnace, this is one we’d rather look at than have you chase. A furnace that buzzes when it’s off usually means the transformer is energized and vibrating — harmless in the short term, but a sign it’s aging.

Banging or booming when the furnace starts

A boom a second or two after the thermostat calls for heat is delayed ignition: gas builds up in the burner compartment before it lights, then ignites all at once. Dirty burners or a weak igniter are the usual cause. Don’t ignore this one — repeated mini-explosions stress the heat exchanger. A single loud bang from the ducts, by contrast, is just sheet metal flexing as air pressure changes; annoying, not dangerous.

Rattling

A rattle from the cabinet is usually a loose panel or screw. A rattle from inside, especially one that changes with blower speed, can be a loose blower wheel. A rattle from the burner area can be a cracked heat exchanger — and that’s a shut-down-and-call situation. If you can’t tell where it’s coming from, treat it as the serious kind until a technician says otherwise.

Squealing or screeching

High-pitched squealing on startup is a belt slipping on an older belt-driven blower, or dry bearings on a direct-drive motor. Both get worse, and both can strand you without heat when they finally let go. This is a quick fix if caught early and a motor replacement if not.

Clicking

A few clicks at startup are normal — that’s the relay and igniter. Continuous clicking with no ignition means the furnace is trying and failing to light: a faulty igniter, a dirty flame sensor, or a gas valve problem. You’ll usually notice this as “the furnace is running but no heat is coming out.”

Whistling

Whistling is air being forced through a gap it shouldn’t be — a filter that’s badly clogged, a duct leak, or a return that’s too small. Replace the filter first; if it continues, the ductwork deserves a look.

Which furnace noises need a technician today

  • Booming on ignition — delayed ignition damages the heat exchanger over time.
  • Rattling from the burner area — possible heat exchanger crack (carbon monoxide risk).
  • Grinding or metal-on-metal — a failing blower motor or wheel.
  • Any noise plus a burning smell, or a carbon monoxide alarm — shut the furnace off and call.

Why the noises show up in fall

A furnace that sat all summer wakes up with dust on the burners, a filter from last spring, and bearings that dried out. That’s exactly what a fall tune-up addresses — we clean the burners, test the igniter and flame sensor, check the blower motor and capacitor, and run a combustion analysis and heat-exchanger inspection. Most of the noises above never start if that’s done every year.
