Why Your AC Blows Warm Air (and How to Fix It).

It’s got to be one of the most frustrating summer problems: your air conditioner is running, but your home still feels hot and sticky. The system is on, the fan is spinning, but the cool comfort you were expecting just isn’t there. Why does this happen, and what can you do about it?

COMMON CAUSES OF POOR COOLING

  1. DIRTY AIR FILTER: A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your AC to work harder and reducing its ability to circulate cold air. Replacing or cleaning your filter every 1–3 months can help prevent this.

  2. REFRIGERANT ISSUES: Low refrigerant (the chemical that absorbs heat and cools your air) often indicates a leak. Without the proper level, your AC can’t remove heat effectively. This requires a licensed technician to repair and recharge the system.

  3. FROZEN EVAPORATOR COIL: A dirty coil, blocked airflow, or low refrigerant can cause the evaporator coil inside your unit to freeze. When this happens, cooling stops entirely until the coil thaws and the root cause is fixed.

  4. OUTDOOR UNIT PROBLEMS: If your condenser (that’s the unit outside your home) is dirty, blocked, or has a failing fan, it can’t release heat properly. Keeping this area clear of debris and having it cleaned annually can make a significant difference.
