How to Clean Your Outside Air Conditioner like a Pro

Posted on

acDoes your central air conditioner not keep you as cool as it used to? Your dirty outside air conditioner could be to blame.

A dirty outside unit (called a condenser unit) causes your air conditioner to cool inefficiently, meaning it runs longer to cool your home. Say hello to costly utility bills in the summer!  It also shortens your air conditioner’s life.

Let’s avoid that, shall we?

In this article, we’ll discuss how to clean the outside unit like a pro.

Gather the A/C cleaning tools you’ll need

  1. Air conditioner coil cleaner
  2. Water hose with adjustable sprayer attachment
  3. Gloves and eye protection
  4. Brush with stiff bristles

Note: When selecting a coil cleaner, follow your air conditioner manufacturer’s recommendations. Using the wrong chemicals could do more harm than good to your unit. Read the cleaner’s instructions carefully.

How to clean your outside air conditioner

Follow these instructions:

  1. Dilute the coil cleaner with water according to the instructions.
  2. Before cleaning the coil, go to the circuit breaker and turn off the power to the outside unit.
  3. Turn the switch to the “off” position.
  4. Remove any matted material (dirt, leaves, etc.) with the brush.
  5. Apply the coil cleaner according to the instructions. Instructions may tell you to let the cleaner soak for several minutes.
  6. Rinse the coil cleaner off with the water sprayer. Start from the top right on the side of the unit. Spray down going in rows (left to right) until you get to the bottom of the unit. Don’t use the highest pressure on your sprayer; you don’t want to bend the delicate coil fins. Make sure you rinse the coils thoroughly so that no chemicals remaining on the coils.
  7. Turn your air conditioner back on.
